“I’m here representing Debt for Climate Germany to stand in solidarity with refugee rights movements in Germany.
But I am also here as a migrant from the drylands of Northeast Brazil, daughter of a rural community that I bring with me wherever I go.
I’m here to point out at the colonial continuities that land us here today, protesting in defense of the bare minimum for refugees. The continuities that keep the Global North rich and the Global Majority poor, sick, and on the run. This is the reason why many of us find ourselves having to move. If it’s not all the way to Europe, to the US, to the metropole wherever it is, it’s within our neighboring territories. Many of us move because neocolonial structures do not give us the option to stay. It’s either disaster, conflict, poverty, lack of opportunity – you name it. It’s the weight of being born in overexploited areas of the world.
This is why we all, migrants or not, have to stand with refugees. First and foremost because they have as much right to life and dignity as any European national. Treating migrants from the Global Majority with dignity isn’t a favor, it’s the bare minimum of historical accountability. Enough with hoarding the world’s resources, then violently oppressing those who come to try to have access to our human, more-than-human, planetary commons.”

“Ich bin als Vertreterin von  Debt for Climate Germany hier, um mich mit den Kämpfen für die Rechte von Geflüchteten  in Deutschland zu solidarisieren.
Aber ich bin auch als Migrantin aus dem Trockengebiet im Nordosten Brasiliens hier, als Tochter einer ländlichen Gemeinschaft, die ich überallhin mitnehme, wo ich hingehe.
Ich bin hier, um auf die kolonialen Kontinuitäten hinzuweisen, die uns heute hierher geführt haben, um für die Verteidigung des Existenzminimums von Flüchtlingen zu protestieren. Die Kontinuitäten, die den globalen Norden reich und die globale Mehrheit arm, krank und auf der Flucht halten. Das ist der Grund, warum viele von uns sich gezwungen sehen, ihren Wohnort zu verlassen. Wenn es nicht ganz nach Europa, in die USA, in die Metropole oder wohin auch immer geht, dann innerhalb unserer benachbarten Regionen. Viele von uns ziehen um, weil die neokolonialen Strukturen uns nicht die Möglichkeit geben, zu bleiben. Es ist entweder eine Katastrophe, ein Konflikt, Armut, Mangel an Möglichkeiten – was auch immer. Es ist die Belastung, in ausgebeutete Gebiete der Welt hineingeboren zu sein.
Deshalb müssen wir alle, ob Migranten oder nicht, an der Seite der Geflüchteten stehen. In erster Linie, weil sie genauso ein Recht auf Leben und Menschenwürde haben wie jede*r europäische Staatsbürger*in. Eine menschenwürdige Behandlung von Migrant*innen aus der globalen Mehrheit ist kein Gefallen, sondern das absolute Minimum an historischer Verantwortlichkeit. Genug damit, die Ressourcen der Welt zu horten und dann diejenigen gewaltsam zu unterdrücken, die versuchen, Zugang zu unserem menschlichen, mehr-als-menschlichen, globalen Gemeingut zu bekommen.”
